Market Research

Our group knew straight away which genre of music we wanted to do for our music video, mainly because it’s our favourite genre, which is Hip-Hop. We knew all had many clear ideas of what we wanted to do but all very different. We all had came up with many different songs which we all agreed could work very well for our video but will all felt we needed to get opinions from people outside of our group.

The target age for Hip-Hop is around 16– 25 years ago. This works out well for us as that’s out age range and all have many friends in that age range which we then asked for their thoughts about our ideas. After asking many different people for their thoughts our choice of song was narrowed down to two songs. Gym Class Heros – Cookie Jar and Kid Cudi Vs crookers – Day ‘N’ Nite. Which of the two we finally decided on was Kid Cudi Vs Crookers – Day ‘N’ Nite. This was because all of the feedback which we received about this song was very good. As the song had been in the charts a year or two ago everyone we asked had heard of it and liked it when it was out in the charts, but as that was a couple of years ago many people said they hadn’t heard the song for a long time and when they heard it when we shown it them they really enjoyed it and become over 60% of the people we asked first choice. Also many people said that they enjoyed the high tempo of beat that is in the song with the mix of the rapping and they felt it would be good to make a fun, entertaining video. Whereas with some of the slower songs we showed people they felt that we could have made a good music video for them songs but might have been a bit dull and slower.

After deciding the song we will be doing our music video to then we begin to look at look at as many music video as possible, collecting as many ideas as we could and after watching so many we decided that a lot of the Hip-Hop music video are actually pretty similar and it came clear that there are key themes for Hip-Hop music videos such as; money, clothes, shoes, cars, girls and colour schemes. This is mostly to show their wealth to the audience. Also in many video which we have watched had scenes which were set in much more grimey and run down places. This is seen to be the hood, where many of the artists came from. In these scenes it comes across that they are proud of where they came from and where they are now.

The-Dream Ft. Fabolous - Shawty Is A 10

I really like this snapshot as its amid shot of Fabolous rapping, everything is in black 'n' white other than his hat and tee. I really think this works well as really makes his clothes stand out and also links to the Hip-Hop genre as the artists are seen have bold personalities and outstanding, like his clothes in this snapshot.

Kid Cudi - Day 'N' Nite

I picked this snapshot out as I’m a huge fan of silhouettes in music videos. I feel they are very effective and gives a sense of mystery as you can’t even anything in much detail just see the outline. Also how the silhouette is in black and white which is our groups main colour scheme, so would work well for our group. This may be something we use in our music video or something of the like of this.
I feel this snapshot is an effect but very simple shot. It is simply a track shot and Kid Cudi is just follow while rapping also I like that the use of a low shot has been used as this makes him appear bigger and more powerful. I feel the most effective point of this shot is the mise-en-sense and the scenery in the background. It appears to be in the “hood” which again fits the genre of hip-hop.

I like this snapshot of the video as I feel it really fits the genre and stereotype of a hip-hop artist really well in the sense that he is trying on a suit, this suggests he has a lot of money and likes to look his best which is how hip-hop artists are seen in the media. However on the previous shot of the video it is Kid Cudi in his suit again but in cartoon, which suggests that its at "night" and he is being searched by the police which is the other side of the hip-hop genre, that they are trouble making criminals.

Wale - Chillin Ft. Lady Gaga

In this snapshot of the music video i really liked the way that the "W" on his jacket for "wale" and as he says Wale the W enlarges. i think this use of editing is effective. Also i really like the setting of which has been used for this shot, it seems a bit rough with the plain brick wall which fits the genre of hip-hop. I also like the use of the close/mid shot on Wale and Lady Gaga in the background. This shows Wale is taking the lead in the video as it's his song and only featuring Lady Gaga.
I feel that this snapshot is very effective in the way that it suggests that he’s willing to go through what ever to get to what he needs, this fits well with the hip-hop genre and the way that hip-hop artist are seen by the media. Also the used of the phrase "I Have A Dream" which is from a speech by Martin Luther King, Jr. This speech played a huge part in the future of hip-hop, getting freedom to the blacks and because of this many of the black artists use his name and quotes in their song lyrics.
I really like this set of shots showing Wale trying on and changing clothes. What i like most is that it doesnt actually show him trying them on. I also like that these shots have been filmed in a walk in wardrobe, this fits the hip-hop genre, they have loads of money, big houses, many different clothes and shoes.

Post Production

During post-production we had a large amount of editing which is was very tedious and takes a long time, during editing we found it one of the most difficult things to do was to get the music and mouth movement timing correct and in sync, we also found that some of the students taking lead roles didn’t emphasize the words enough so it didn’t look very good as it appeared that their mouths weren’t opening wide enough. While we were filming the outside and inside scene, there were people in the background that shouldn’t have been there. We also found that the allocated time didn't allow us to re-shoot some of the clips which should have been re-shot, such as one of our band members had his hair cut after our first day of filming and when it came to the second day his hair had changed and which is noticeable of the video. I also found that the video editing software was very basic and didn't allow us to edit it the video in an effective or quality way. Also the lack of computers that had the editing software effected us as it took longer and waiting for our chance to use them.

Production

Production the music video itself took quite a long time, as we had to take many different takes due to a number of factors such as; people laughing during takes, people forgetting the words or not knowing their words well enough and mistiming theirs parts also not knowing when their parts were. As well as people being too shy during filming and needing to be more enthusiastic and over the top. We had to get the timing spot on and in sync which took many attempts.
