Market Research

Our group knew straight away which genre of music we wanted to do for our music video, mainly because it’s our favourite genre, which is Hip-Hop. We knew all had many clear ideas of what we wanted to do but all very different. We all had came up with many different songs which we all agreed could work very well for our video but will all felt we needed to get opinions from people outside of our group.

The target age for Hip-Hop is around 16– 25 years ago. This works out well for us as that’s out age range and all have many friends in that age range which we then asked for their thoughts about our ideas. After asking many different people for their thoughts our choice of song was narrowed down to two songs. Gym Class Heros – Cookie Jar and Kid Cudi Vs crookers – Day ‘N’ Nite. Which of the two we finally decided on was Kid Cudi Vs Crookers – Day ‘N’ Nite. This was because all of the feedback which we received about this song was very good. As the song had been in the charts a year or two ago everyone we asked had heard of it and liked it when it was out in the charts, but as that was a couple of years ago many people said they hadn’t heard the song for a long time and when they heard it when we shown it them they really enjoyed it and become over 60% of the people we asked first choice. Also many people said that they enjoyed the high tempo of beat that is in the song with the mix of the rapping and they felt it would be good to make a fun, entertaining video. Whereas with some of the slower songs we showed people they felt that we could have made a good music video for them songs but might have been a bit dull and slower.

After deciding the song we will be doing our music video to then we begin to look at look at as many music video as possible, collecting as many ideas as we could and after watching so many we decided that a lot of the Hip-Hop music video are actually pretty similar and it came clear that there are key themes for Hip-Hop music videos such as; money, clothes, shoes, cars, girls and colour schemes. This is mostly to show their wealth to the audience. Also in many video which we have watched had scenes which were set in much more grimey and run down places. This is seen to be the hood, where many of the artists came from. In these scenes it comes across that they are proud of where they came from and where they are now.
